I had that two times - first after "Upgrading" from Demo to Steam Version. In Steam, I had to right-click the game, select properties and then clicked "verify files" - after that I was able to play again. The second time I tried frontlinie version of the game and went back to "normal" - same...

I vote for 3 because I think it's very clear how it's meant to work. But did you think about converting? I mean you could "pay" 2 silvers with one gold and vice versa

For me it's "Grein-de-ah" (German pronounced hehe) Edit: greinen (verb) in German is an (old?) word for "crying" which suits perfect regarding the Arcade Mode of the game ;-)
