First Impressions 2.0

  • General impressions: I enjoyed playing the game, both singeplayer and multiplayer. I'm looking forward to updates and the finished game.
  • What you liked the most: I really enjoyed how open the skill trees were. I liked the different types of quests you could do as they were quite varied and weren't just 'go here, get this, return'. The boss fights were also difficult without being too difficult. I also really liked the arcade mode, although I didn't think I would before I tried it - it's fun but challenging. I also liked some of the puzzles which weren't simple and obvious, e.g. the chicken behind the rock quest.
  • What you liked the least: I felt some things could of been explained better, like what is that house in the woods? Why is there a shrine in the woods? Some of the culture of the land could have been more developed. Also, I thought that some enemies could have been harder to battle or had special attacks or something, like the Pecko (is that it's name?) that breaks through the ceiling. Also, while this didn't really weaken my experience, I felt the pets could be of more use; I know you've not finished the pets yet, but I think they should each have a unique ability or skill that they give you.
  • Confusing elements: I understood what to do most of the time, however the menus were a little difficult to traverse at first but they did become easier after 10-20 minutes of gameplay. Also, I didn't understand why you couldn't change movement, attack and shield keys while in-game - and if you could, I couldn't find out how, other than quitting to the main menu.
  • Optional content: I went back to the arena and tried the two modes available right now, and I still haven't been able to beat the Red Slime, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I also tried a bit of fishing, and I liked how the fishing mechanic is quite unique, but I thought that there could be more items that just fish to catch, like a rare chance to pick up a special item or something like that. I did all of the sidequests, and as I said before I felt they were varied and I enjoyed them.

  • General impressions: Was the game as a whole an enjoyable experience? If it was longer, would you continue playing?
Initially I had my doubts about this game and nearly passed it up. I have been let down hard in the past, I guess you could say I had given up on PC RPGs. Glad I didn't because this game blew my f*ing mind. I have a friend who also gave it a try with me the other night and I am not alone, he was blown away as well.

I wasn't expecting much based upon the countless other games that have tried to do the whole 'SNES JRPG' thing, but boy I was wrong. I've gone through a lot of 2D PC RPGs, many try to imitate the 2D JRPG style but fall short. This is it. This is as close as I think anyone has been to keeping the general feel and look. The quality and care put into this game is unbelievable for such a small team, mad props to you all.
  • What you liked the most: Was there some elements that stood out to you as really good?
The sprite art is beautiful, but above all the one thing that stands out to me is how fluid the game is. The animations, the controls, the general feel and flow of combat are unparalleled (on the PC). Others that I have tried are clunky, and just feel poorly programmed. This feels the way it did in the classics (SoM especially), and that's what we've all grown to love. The difficulty is almost spot on, I know some of the other players in here think some mobs should be removed (you guys should look up 'Nintendo Hard') or quests made easier but I disagree. I would even say you could go a bit further on the difficulty.

I'm using a PS3 controller, with DS3 emulating the XB360 layout. It feels perfect. Great job on the controls.
  • Confusing elements: Did you understand what to do and how? Could you navigate through the menus?
I like the way you introduced things to new players, quite clever. Instead of jamming it down the throat of the user you kind of placed things in 'just the right spot' to give them guidance. I respect that, I hate when a game treats the player like a baby. I feel things are intuitive enough.
  • Optional content: Did you do any side activities, like side quests, fishing or the arena? If so, were the activities varied and enjoyable?
I feel that they are a great addition to the game. Not much else to say other than I wish there were more!

  • What you liked the least: Was there something which you felt weakened the experience?
This is hard to answer as I enjoyed the hell out of this game, and it's not quite finished so I don't know what you have already planned. I'll wait to answer this one until the game comes out, but I will say I really hope the crafting system is expanded further.

In short- this game kicks ass and I'm not sure why it isn't more popular. I hope this project of yours grows to be so successful that it never ends. Please keep doing what you're doing- you have perfected the formula.

  • General impressions: As a big fan of Secret of mana, Zelda and RPG's in general i couldn't have asked for a better game ever since i saw it when steam greenlight became a thing i was waiting to put my hands on this. And i wasn't dissapointed.
  • What you liked the most: The Combat is very fun like expected.
  • What you liked the least: I know i might be alone here but my first reaction when opening the skill menu was : ... what? that's it? Iguess it is a lot of work to implement even this much skills and to balance them right but as someone who likes to tinker with specs i was a bit underwhelmed by the amount of skills available. Also i don't know whta you have planned for Gold or Final charges but maybe beeing able to choose between 2 different final charges would be cool. Like let's say i put the final point into my cloudbuddy there could be a choice like: The cloudbuddy actively flys towards enemys and the other choice would maybe be giving the lightning strikes an Area effect.
  • Confusing elements: Not much to say here the only thing i saw when watching let's plays is that many people don'T seem to notice the chargeing spells system or what the charged up versions do.
  • Optional content: Oh boy did i do sideactivities :p When even beating up bushes to farm berries to feed to your pumpkin pet is kind of enjoyable you know that you did something right.
I've read something about you wanting to make other games after being finished with this one and i know this is waaaay to earlie to think about things like that but i would totaly buy dlc's later on with WoW like Dungeons designed to run through multiple times with rare bossdrops and challenging bossfights im talkin way Harder then Gun-D4m Hardmode and still challenging with the best gear but im just dreaming here. :p

(Unrelated : What i don't quite get is how you treat your study's writing that you wouldn't have to pick up your studies for a whole year with the money you made already don't you study because you want to get your diploma or anything and being able to focus on other things once you finish them? just confuses me a bit :p)

Keep up the good work.

  • General impressions: Nostalgia wasn't enough to interest me for over 5 minutes because the music was unattractive, felt a bit repetitive.
  • What you liked the most: only thing i liked was that it was a parody of the snes game.
  • What you liked the least: unappealing characters, especially the face could use more work! no addiction..
  • Confusing elements: the ui is a bit confusing as i dont usually go "ugh too lazy exiting game!"
  • Optional content: the only thing i did was kill blobs, bunnies, smacked chests then got bored.
after all i prefer more of an aggressive openworld pvp game, maybe thats why it didn't entertain me, all i ask for the graphics is the face lift and i hope it isn't pay to play, i would instantly drop it sadly. good luck with your game! ^^

  • General impressions: Secrets of Grindea is remarkably enjoyable. I intend to pre-order and support this games development and developers because I think some great things are happening here.
  • What you liked the most: I really enjoyed the fluid combat, the tongue in cheek comedy, as well as the responsiveness of the games engine. Skill selection was generally good - could use some more variety, but I know that is in active development.
  • What you liked the least: The biggest issue I have with the game (and there aren't many) is the fact that all skills need to be charged. I suspect this is done in the spirit of secret of mana 1 or possibly Zelda with a whirlwind sword, but I strongly feel that using skill charge as a blanket mechanic takes away from the game play in some situations. (I will make a post in the suggestion forums regarding this as well)
  • Confusing elements: i was able to pick up secret of grindea and start playing without any issues. One thing I have not figured out yet is a method to change the game's resolution / full-screen modes. Unequipping skills from quickslots felt a bit awkward due to the number of keypresses required.
  • Optional content: I played side content once or twice, but the majority of my time was spent fighting mobs. When I played side content, it was enjoyable, but not something I would personally do over and over again.
Overall, I am more excited about this game's release than any other upcoming game! I'm looking forward to playing a lot more as more content is released.

  • General impressions: Was the game as a whole an enjoyable experience? If it was longer, would you continue playing?

At the end of the storymode as it is right now I was abit disappointed by how little story there was, then I started playing Arcade-Mode and that totally kept me going.
Concerning the Story-mode tho, I picked this game up as as a game I could be an explorer in again and it totally delivered on that end. I'm eagerly awaiting the next update for the frontline version, which is supposed to come out "before the end of the week", so yea - I'll defo play again.

  • What you liked the most: Was there some elements that stood out to you as really good?

The Mo---fkn Bag made me laugh for 2mins straight with his first dialogue and kept cracking me up.
Besides that, the grinding possibilities and achievements with actual rewards in form of cosmetics -
this also includes the cosmetics from arcade mode - the idea of you actually keeping some sort of progress when doing Arcade-Mode is probably the only reason I've played it as much as I did.

One thing I really hate are achievements for the sake of achievements.
Apparently that's a thing nowadays tho so I also really enjoyed you guys not going down that path.

Oh and I totally forgot about the treasure maps and puzzles- also absolutely loved those.
I want more of those, guys!

  • What you liked the least: Was there something which you felt weakened the experience?

The small pool of pets to choose from and the little possibilities to customize them.
I was really excited about my slimebro, but when I realized how little possibility to customize there are ... :c
Seeing certain things (jump-spots, sprouts, isolated house in Eastern Evergrind Fields) and not being able to reach or interact with them was also kinda saddening, I wonder whether it would cause you guys trouble to just add those locations/things to the maps combined with the required features to deal with them.

  • Confusing elements: Did you understand what to do and how? Could you navigate through the menus?

I literally ran through the entire Flying Fortress like 2-3 times on the first run-through.
Reason being was me remembering someone mentioning those teleporters being for more advanced members of the collectors guild and I didn't consider myself that.
Also instead of the teleporting being in the actual options menu I would've expected the teleporters to open some kind of port-screen when you stand on them, but that's maybe just me.
Blame me for not being too keen on camping the menu checking out every single tab or missing some kind of dialogue.
Besides that I didn't really have any other problems with the menus.

  • Optional content: Did you do any side activities, like side quests, fishing or the arena? If so, were the activities varied and enjoyable?

Certainly, did all the achievements (which includes fishing) except for the 10 unique crafts (which is not yet possible, RIGHT?), all the treasure maps, all side quests - basically tried to do everything in the game.
I made another character because I didnt know of /respec and you being able to switch to hardmode in the options and am currently trying to get everything possible on that one. So you gotta somewhat include that in my first impressions since I would've done it with my other toon if I had known about those 2 things.
Also tried doing the arena, kinda failed and didnt really bother figuring it out YET.
Obviously the arena wasn't very varied in itself, but the pool of possible activites which are included in the game so far kind of surprised me - in a positive way.

Hope this helps guys, thanks for the game and keep it up.
I see alot of potential in this game, but at the same time alot to be done too!

  • General impressions: The base game was pretty enjoyable, the animations make combat feel really nice. Though playing through the story mode, I can't help but feel that it's actually very short! Even with the coming additions; the pacing is too fast... And the world too tiny. Speaking of the world being too tiny, there really needs to be a more side-maps with hidden secrets or just padding with more enemies (and rare enemies in some?). I think the problem is that each of the current maps are too focused on being "crafted".
  • What you liked the most: Combat, I haven't played much Zelda(-likes) but it felt pretty meaty... Even if I'm not actually very good at it... Just whacking enemies for coins feels satisfying. My main gripe is the swarms (of halloweeds) which becomes hard to manage.
  • What you liked the least: Lack of health potions (despite other issues). As much as I find them "cheap", I just want some way to heal myself in a pinch. Started the final phase of GUN-D4M with only a smidgeon of life left, how nerve-wracking that was! Could implement a kind of drinking delay, or a harder to find magical heal scroll.
  • Confusing elements: Most of the game's elements are pretty straightforward. Can't help but feel that the game's pet system isn't obvious.
  • Optional content: Fishing? Yes, satisfying. Food for the slime!

First of all, I played only the demo. (But I am following the game for 2 years)
  • General impressions: It was really fun, I can't wait the game to release since I don't like playing betas/early access games.
  • What you liked the most: The graphical style of the game, the music and I liked that the game explained me that my bag is infinitely large :D
  • What you liked the least: Loading screens. This game only eats 180 MB in my RAM, is it somehow possible to preload all maps I would go? (Its probably stupid - I don't know much about game developement)
  • Confusing elements: 1. The collision between objects and the character are strange - I mean that you slide past objects if you ran against the edge of it (I hope that you'll understand my broken English).

I haven't read through the entire thread. What I'd like to suggest so far is the ability to dismiss your pet and the quest "chicken chase" seems a bit off. The hens parked themselves in weird positions which made it impossible(?) to budge. At the end of the village there is a cliff with a fance. Between the rock hill where a house lays upon and the fence there's a small gap where they go. Also between two flower pots they managed to park so they just went back and forth like a ping pong ball.

First of all I'd like to say that this is not where you post suggestions or bugs. This is the first impression where you talk about how the game felt like when you played it for the first time. Go to the first page in this thread and look at the first comment posted by Teddy to see what this thread is all about. Don't take this the wrong way, many people (including myself) have posted stuff in other threads that are not on the thread topic and those ideas or problems are then lost because you don't know where it was said. It's more of a practical thing that we try to stay on topic, not just to follow the rules. :)

Do you mean dismissing pets as in not only leaving them on the farm but sending them home while you're on an adventure? Because there is a way to leave your pets at the farm. It's maybe not always fun to teleport back to town and then walk over to the farm just to leave your pet so if you're suggesting that we can dismiss our pets while outside of the farm then feel free to make a suggestion thread about it. (If there isn't already one.)

Could you take a few screenshots or record a short video and put this in a new bug thread regarding this issue? The post should be tagged as [Gameplay] with a descriptive title. ;) Sorry for all the ranting.

  • General impressions: Was the game as a whole an enjoyable experience? If it was longer, would you continue playing?

I reaaaaally enjoy this game! To be 100% honest, although the game isn't near completion it's still one of my all time favourite games. My favourite game is a Link to the past for SNES and this game has a similar style and world (as well as the music). I love it so much. I would love for it to be longer!
    • What you liked the most: Was there some elements that stood out to you as really good?
The music is always important and it is great in this game. I also like the tributes to movies or other games. I am also really impressed that they made the monsters have additional abilities when playing in multiplayer. It makes it a lot more fun and a different experience altogether in multiplayer. Coop is very very important to me and I want to share this world with friends so I'm happy the story and arcade modes are both coop. I enjoy that every spell is different and many of them have different skill requirements (razor wind has different aiming than meteor etc).
      The arcade mode is amazing.
The story mode is amazing.. so far

    • What you liked the least: Was there something which you felt weakened the experience? I just hope the world becomes larger.. It seems pretty small to me. I know it's not yet complete, but there isn't much traveling to get to each temple. I'd like it if they had some more transition areas between differing environments. Such as have a more mixed autumn/winter area before just going straight from an autumn grass area to a pure snow area. In these inbetween areas there could be hidden things, other things to explore, perhaps nothing at all but it would still be great to have. The map doesn't need to be so condensed.
      No local coop mode :(

      Confusing elements? None

Optional content: I enjoy the sidequests a lot and want more! I'd suggest chain sidequests where you need to go from one place and maybe deliver something and then go from there to somewhere else etc, but there are only hints perhaps.

      Suggestions:
Once you can get your own place and craft/loot decorations that would be superb, especially if some of the decorations were rare. House expansions would be great too! Even if it's done similarly to the arcade town expansion! It would give something to work towards. your house could slowly become a manor or a small keep or something. New rooms could provide sidequests or whatever. Endless possibilities :p

      Needs local coop!!

It would also be neat to have a sort of persistent part of the game to keep people playing once the story is complete. Something to keep you in that world aside from collecting.
Perhaps you could have a farm. Maybe there could be a harvest moon type element where you can interact with townsfolk, marry them, sell things, participate in events. (therefore have a calender/time advancement, but with no end date.) Then you could have a day/night cycle with different monsters and events happening at both times :O

There are 230237502357235 possibilities for this game. You could capture a huge harvest moon/sandbox crowd if you did that.

Also! It would be fantastic if all armour showed up differently on the player. This would really create some good customization and individuality.

I have spent the last few days playing until the current point of completion and here are my thoughts.
  • General impressions: Great game! Quite fun so far! I like the direction it's heading in and all of the bosses are very good. A few of the Temple of Seasons bosses are a bit unbalanced and rough, but I understand that they aren't complete yet.
  • What you liked the most: I really liked the bullet hell bosses. I don't think there will be more of them, but the mecha boss was the best boss in a game I've fought in a while. I also really like the way that the game rewards grinding.
  • What you liked the least: So, at the moment, there are multiple missing sound effects and animations. The Seasons bosses also felt very unbalanced, as I mentioned before. The first midboss felt fine, but the plants that grow during the fight take too long to break down and thus the arena gets filled to the brim with them. The Season Hydra is a great idea, but the fire hydra is probably the most overpowered boss in the game currently. The fire does way too much damage per second and because it doesn't go away until you change seasons, it's very difficult to find ways around. The last boss of Seasons, Winter, probably feels the most balanced. I have no complaints about him. Other than one thing. There's a part in the fight where Winter summons torrents of snow to push you into the right side of the screen and then lifts up a maze of spikes for you to go through. This would be fine, but if you are on the far left side of the arena when Winter activates this move, you can't make it to the far right in time. I think it should be slowed down a bit or something. Other than those minor issues, the game is great!
  • Confusing elements: At one point in the Temple of Seasons, you use a phase plate (or whatever they're called) to warp towards the lower section of the room. In any other season, it is near impossible to see the phaseplate. I suggest some way to see it more clearly in other seasons.
  • Optional content: I did a majority of the side activities and found them all enjoyable. I have no complaints. Just want more, of course!
Hope this helps the dev team and gives them some insight! :)

Ninja Edit: Forgot to mention something. While I was grinding for crystals, I noticed my XP bar never budged. In my opinion, this should be changed. I have no clue how XP works in the game currently, but it seems as if it only rises if you fight enemies in the portion of the game your in currently, which is very strange.

Ninja Edit 2: Looking at my posts and others, I now notice that my post doesn't really give off that I enjoyed the game. I really truly did. It may seem like I found many problems with it, but that's only because I went into the "beta" portion of the game, and I understand that. I would like to make clear that I enjoyed the game and what it has to offer so far, but I wish the problems to be fixed and, of course, for more content. The graphical style is great too, although I will always find the portraits to be out of place. Seems as if drawn portraits in RPG's has become a staple, and it seems I'll never adjust to it. It's great nonetheless, however, and I wish to see more of your guys' work! Hope you all do well in the future and I hope that each part of the game is just as great as the first! :)

That's some sweet information you're giving us! :D We've actually been talking about the balance of the Season Temple and the part you mention as confusing is something we haven't been able to clear up because we're all used to the game from hours and hours of gameplay. :p You don't have to defend your point that you love the game so much, I don't think that the devs would stop just because they aren't getting 10/10 reviews every time. Infact that would be pretty alarming because the game can in no way be perfect already and feedback is a big help in reaching that 10/10. It's always nice to see a new face here on the forum and your First Impression post is most certainly going to help the devs to make the game as good as they can. :)

Well, I'm glad that it can be of some use! And yeah, I understand that they don't expect 10/10's, but when I reread my post, it seemed like I jumped right into all the problems in the game currently. I suppose it might be nice if they're looking for a "no nonsense, get straight to the point" kind of post, but it seemed like I didn't really say that I liked the game. Regardless, it makes me feel good that it will be put to some use. And in response to MrChocodemon (because I can't seem to hit reply twice without splitting it into 2 messages), I'm sort of glad I wasn't the only one as well. It was difficult to see. And I wear glasses. Anyway, I hope to be around the forum often and help out as much as possible. :) Thanks for the kind responses!

  • General impressions:
Hands down one of the most awesome games i have played in years! I have been looking for a game like this in months now, it even came to the point where i started leaning how to program, so that i could make the game myself. However, that is no longer needed after i found SoG (I will keep programming thought). A week ago or so, i saw a youtuber upload a video with this game, i watched 3 minutes of the video before i new that i had to buy it my self! #BestGame2015

  • What you liked the most:
The retro aspect, the boss fights, graphics, the fact that i can use a controller (RPG's need a controller), the boss fights, the story, activities/side quests, the music (it is very enjoyable), oh and did i mention the BOSS FIGHTS??? I just really like the game in a whole. I also think you have done a great job on the skilltree that is in the frontline version.

  • What you liked the least:
Items. Don't take it too serious, i like the items, and i do realise that the game is still BETA. But i need more items to chose from, more items to grind for, more items that comes with the story-line (maybe as rewards). Right now you can get i few items really easy, and then there are a few more grind intensive items. Some of them which brings me to my next topic, boss items. If i am not mistaken, GUN-D4M drops an item that i can use for crafting a weapon? Well anyway, BOSS REMATCH! I need the power to grind the sh*t out of the bosses. Whether it will be through an item or event, i dont care, i just need it. It's a part of RPG's, i think it's awesome though that i can grind Winter, since the frontline version does not go any further.

  • Confusing elements:
The menu's where easy to learn, good job, wait, uhhh, what is your team/company even called? Well, uhm, back to the point, i find EXP as a rather confusion part of the game. I need numbers, so that way i can see that i actually gains EXP, and from what monsters i gain the most EXP. Atm my main character is lvl 18, and i have been grinding for hours, my EXP bar have yet to move a single pixel, numbers would make me able to see that i actually do gain EXP.

  • Optional content:
I love it, i have done every side-quest, explored all locations and found as many secret places as i could. I personally find exploring as a big deal, so it's nice to see that you have implemented a few secret areas. And then about Arcade mode, i find t good, i can see why some people find it adicting, i'm just not one of those. The game mode is fun, but i enjoy the main adventure a bit more.
Sorry for the long post, i know a lot of this was to go in a new thread, but i don't feel like any discussion is needed. But if any of you want to discuss some of it, i'll be glad to make a diffrent post. By the way, awesome game guys, keep up the good work. Since you have made me addicted to this game, you better finish it! :D

Well anyway, BOSS REMATCH! I need the power to grind the sh*t out of the bosses. Whether it will be through an item or event, i dont care, i just need it.

Well, I have some information that you'll be glad to hear. You can rematch boss fights! In the Collectors Guild if you go up the stairs and go to the left you'll find the Memory Room which is where you go to refight bosses.

The exp system is pretty easy to understand but you might have to grind a while to realize that you're not getting any exp. Basically it stops giving you exp (or you get like 1 exp/kill) once you "out level" the area you're in. This was added so that you couldn't just farm slimes and level up to ridiculous levels.

Also, if you didn't know, you get hats and furniture for your Story mode characters if you play Arcade mode. ;)

Oh my! I completely forgot to look around in the Collectors Guild! Thanks mate, maybe now i can get the last two cards i need ;) But another thing, how do i 'place' furnitur, and where do i place it?

The exp part sounds like a great idea, i didn't really consider that a possibillity. Another point for Pixel Ferrets!
