Considering she has to redeem herself, if she doesn't have amazing feats like our best friend Luke... I think it's safe to say she's gone.

Oh yeah. Although Ed's still around. Lin went and never came back. She mentioned something about her "tribe" after the fishing challenge, so she probably lives somewhere exotic.
She was actually supposed to have a major role in the early stages of development, a reoccurring character that would cause you trouble, ninja loot stuff and all that jazz.
Because of the planned length of the story however, we decided to cut her out. We really wanted to be able to flesh out all of our major sub-characters to get people invested instead of having a battalion of 1 dimensional characters appearing all over the place. Whether we've succeeded with that or not is another discussion, but that was the thought process at least ;D
With all that said, having her hang around as a regular NPC somewhere would probably make sense.

She could maybe have a purpose similar to that without it being a part of the storyline. Maybe she has a tiny, random % chance to appear in the areas outside of dungeons/towns (Seasonne, Pumpkin Woods, Pillar Mountains, etc) waiting around to ambush Collectors. Determined to prove she's worthy of being one and to regain her honor, she attacks them at an equal level to the player's level. You beat her, get a random prize, she runs off and the random encounter chance for her to reppear begins anew as you explore the game. You lose, you lose a lot of gold? Or you can just try running for dear life.
Essentially turning her into a Yuffie figure. That could be fun. Actually coming across NPCs who want to hurt in the wild would put me on edge.

Lin Mei has been spotted in China, where she was seen hanging out with Matt Damon, apparently dealing with some issues regarding the great wall. Turns out she's a commander nowadays as well, who knew?
Maybe failing the Collector's exam wasn't so bad after all!
