In arcade if you have a summon out and die you cannot use it next run unless you got it to a silver charged version. You can learn the skill but it won't do anything when you try to activate it. Starting another run fixes it.
I think it has to do with the game trying to re-summon after death and assumes it is there when you try to summon it.
