Windows updated my computer without telling me the other day. It fixed some bugs, but for some reason it also likes to corrupt SoG save files.
One fix I've been doing to this is opening a character, then saving and quitting to title, multiple times. This meant that the last backup is only 1 -5 seconds ago, meaning when it's restored you don't lose any progress. I've gotten this to work, so no worries there.
I think it only affects characters which you've opened in your last session, so there's no need to open all of your characters.
Please spread the word about this, to avoid SoG players around the world losing all their progress. I'll go make a post on the steam page too.

All of my other stuff is fine, so I doubt I've got any hard drive failures.
