About the town in arcade

What the upgrade town does unlock ?
I mean, is it just for the pleasure of having a bigger town or does it unlock bonuses ?

I believe that you can probably enter your house at a later stage and decorate it [You get furniture items after all =P].

How many town upgrades is there? And about how many point do you need as total for last town upgrade. (including the items too)
