Every time I see one of those spike pop-up challenges in Arcade Mode, I run and hide in the corner. Or if I'm fighting Terrorweed, well, I just take the hits.
Because while there's a graphical representation of something about to pop up, you can't see it if you're moving into it or standing on it.
If you're standing on a spot where a thorn has visually started to sprout, maybe put a red /!\ over the player so they know to quickly scoot?
