Having not left Evergrind West, switch back to bee pet
Boom, crash. I think this might coincide with the fact that pets don't appear in Oak's farm until you re-enter the area. It tries to swap back to your bee pet which for some reason doesn't exist or can't be loaded.
Your theory was spot on; the code turning an enemy into a pet just removed the old pet from the map, not taking into account the possibility of being in Evergrind West, where they should be spawned!
