Here's an alternative to play with a gamepad (JoyToKey) :

(JoyToKey is a shareware, but you can freely try it without any limitation in functionality)

Thanks worked a treat, this is the best way to play, takes me back to my Zelda on the Super Nintendo days.

My PS4 controller also worked right off the bat. Although I wish there were a way to reconfigure the controls. I don´t want shield on X (A) but instead on square (X). Anyone knows if there is a way to rebind without the use of external programs?

No but JoyToKey is a good program, nice and easy to figure out.
