In the spoiler below, there's a link to a video on how to restore character backups. Even if you're not restoring a backup, I'd suggest watching the whole video to get yourself familiar with how the process works. To duplicate a character, take the slot number - 1 of the character you want to duplicate, and find that number in the characters folder. Then copy and paste it, then change the number to a slot number - 1 that doesn't already have a character in. Do the same thing in the worlds folder. That should duplicate your character for you.
Unless you plan on reverting to the stable version, there's isn't really an issue with going on frontline straight away. The only issue might be if you only want to play on multiplayer with someone who completely refuses to upgrade to the frontline. Hope this helps
